Having been through the sports scholarship process himself, Michael Ellis from Dunmow in Essex, was perfectly placed to set up a business to support others to do the same.
Launched in November 2016, The National Athlete Consultancy helps talented athletes secure sports scholarship opportunities in the American University sporting system. Having spent four years playing football in the USA, business owner Michael specialises in working with football players, however The National Athlete Consultancy will also support young men and women in other sports, including tennis, swimming, golf, track and field, and field hockey, to name just a few.
We spoke to Michael about how he turned his business dream into reality.
What is your background and how did it influence The National Athlete Consultancy?
My life has always involved sports. I have played football from a young age at a high level with clubs, including Arsenal’s youth set up.
After leaving university I worked in technology sales and finance before deciding to set up my own business. I’ve been through the process as a player, and now as a business we take a genuine interest in ensuring the care of players and their parents.
Have you faced challenges while starting up your own business?
I’m not afraid of the hard work required in order to succeed in business, and I’m prepared for challenges that may come my way.
No matter what industry or business you work in, you’ve got to get on the phone, you’ve got to network, you’ve got to keep knocking when you get told no. You simply have to connect with customers and partners. I won’t take no for an answer, and I don’t take rejection personally. That is why I will succeed.
What have been the highlights of starting your own business?
I’m currently working from home, and the highlights of starting my own business include being able to work to my own schedule, and the freedom and flexibility to make my own decisions. I have received a huge amount of support and encouragement from friends and family, and I am already planning a bright future.
