Maya began experimenting with the sense of smell as an added medium. Inspired by an old family photo album from the decades before her birth, Maya set out to capture, by way of scent, these moments in time, blending the spirit connected to the classic 1970’s Scandinavian idyll, combined with the soul of her esoteric Gambian heritage.

Born in Västerås Sweden, Maya Njie moved to London in her late teens. Her background lies in surface design and photography, inspired by her childhood Maya delved further into the olfactory world, experimenting with different raw materials and teaching herself perfumery. After launching the business Maya faced challenges growing and scaling the business, with manufacturers and ordering stock and build relationships with wholesalers. Maya is currently trading at renowned retailer Liberty of London.

How has Nwes support changed your business?

Receiving the grant has allowed the business to standalone, having funds to order stock and forecast budgeting puts everything in perspective, I can now increase operations and know exactly what I’m preparing for”.
What are your plans over the coming year?
“I’ve recently moved into my new office unit located in Isle of Dogs. I plan to take on a PR/Marketing company to advance my brand and will launch a campaign this Summer that will go across social media and Liberty retail store. To maintain my growth and increase revenue I will aim to secure more wholesale accounts”.
