Since leaving the RAF in 2006, Kevin Attree has worked in the Oil & Gas and Construction sectors where he gained a broad understanding of requirements of both industries, at all levels.

He has held several Senior technical, managerial and Board positions, and has developed business in the UK, Europe, APAC and Africa. His most recent role was as Associate Director heading up a team of structural engineers.

After 16 years in the sector, Kevin decided to set-up Impact Energy, an energy consultancy business. He now uses his decades’ of knowledge to help develop proposal opportunities for his clients, guiding them through the negotiation stage right up to bid finalisation.

What does your business offer?

Impact Energy Consulting (IEC) assists small and medium-sized organisations (SMEs) across a variety of sectors within the Energy industry, to develop and grow. We provide specialised and focused business development, sales and marketing services to help our clients achieve greater visibility within their target market.

Our clients value our experience and flexibility – the IEC team can be mobilised at short notice to provide support or manage long-term marketing and sales campaigns.

If our clients are looking to penetrate deeper in a known market or to expand into domestic or international markets, the IEC team has a large network of contacts to present our clients’ products and services to.

How did the support from Nwes assist you?

I spent some valuable time with Ian Bird who was able to confirm that my business plan was on track. He also put me in touch with a suitable marketing company and various contacts from his network.

I attended the 2-day Nwes ‘Virtual First Steps to Start Up’ workshop, which was excellently led by business advisor Richard Voisey. This is a superb 2-day workshop and benefits companies about to start up, as well as those already up and running.

What has been the highlight of starting your own business?

Although it may sound cliched, I feel I am now the master of my own destiny. I make the strategic decisions and take the company in the direction that I want it to go to grow my business.

What is the one thing you wish you had known sooner on your journey?

That is a difficult one, there are so many areas to think about when starting up, but speaking to organisations such as Nwes, that freely give practical and relevant advice is certainly something I could have done sooner and would recommend this to anyone in a similar situation.

What are your plans over the coming year?

To consolidate the business over the next year, developing interest in my company and gain a regular stream of clients by working on a day rate, retainer and commission basis.
