With 17 years’ experience in the flooring industry, Peterborough business owner En Shadat worked his way up from sales assistant to­­­ owner of his own flooring business. Nwes spoke to En to learn more about his start-up journey.

Could you tell us a little more about En-Rich Carpets and your USP?

My business, En-Rich Carpets, supplies and installs flooring for the public. We sell carpet, vinyl and luxury vinyl as well as laminate, wood flooring, rugs and artificial grass.

Customer service is of paramount importance in my business. I don’t advocate pushy sales tactics; customers can browse, feel relaxed and not pressured to buy. For any customers that are unable to come to the shop, they can book a time slot to suit them and I will provide a “home choose” service.

Why did you decide to start your business?

I have been in the flooring industry for 17 years and have worked for some big national companies.

I noticed that local flooring businesses were always looking to hire more staff, business was obviously booming, and I felt that I had so much to offer. It was at that point that I decided to jump in at the deep end and do this myself! I knew I would be able to implement all of the information and experience I had gained in previous positions for the benefit of my own business.

Why do you believe En-Rich Carpets can succeed?

I have made a lot of good friends in the industry and have forged good relationships with suppliers. I always manage to get the best deals for my customers, and my customer service is of the greatest importance to me. I always try to make my customers’ experience as seamless and stress free as possible.

When did you gain your first customer?  How did this make you feel?

I gained my first customer through a recommendation due to my knowledge of the industry, my patience and most of all my customer service. I was absolutely delighted that my team and I had made a strong, lasting impression. At the moment, the business comprises of me and a family member who covers the business while I am away.

What challenges have you encountered on your start-up journey?

As I am new to owning a business, I know I need to concentrate on advertising to promote my business and attract more customers. I must work on this most days, which can be hard work but at the end of it, when it all comes together, I can say to myself, “you’ve done good!”

Where do you hope to be in two years’ time?  What do you hope to achieve?

After a couple of years trading I would like to be in a sound business position where I can add extras into the business such as home furnishings. The first steps will be building a good customer base and extending the business towards small commercial services. I would also like to be able to employ another full-time staff member.

What have been the most helpful experiences and knowledge that you have gained from working with Nwes?

My Business Advisor, Sergio Aschettino, has been so supportive since I started working with Nwes. Because I have ventured into this by myself, the support I have received has been invaluable. Sergio has given me a lot of confidence and he’s always at the end of the phone should I have any questions.

How has Nwes’ support affected you and your business?

By showcasing my business as a case study, Nwes is helping me to build customer awareness. I am hopeful that my case study could also help or inspire other people who are looking to take the plunge. The help I have received from Nwes has even got me thinking about starting up another business once En-Rich Carpets has taken off, and I’m sure I can do it with great confidence and a little help from Nwes.

Do you have any tips or advice for others starting up their own business?

My advice is “go for it”! I kept helping others achieve their success, now it’s my turn.

It may be daunting to think about, but that thinking shouldn’t put you off. Put pen to paper, use your experiences and remember, you are your business.
