When Daisy Walsh was growing up, she had two passions: Judo and fashion.  She competed internationally at Judo and was awarded several medals. With dreams of representing her country in the Olympics, her judo career ended after she suffered a knee injury.  It was then that Daisy recognised a gap in the market for fashionable sportswear.  She was able to follow her other passion for fashion and established Daisy & Co London in 2016.

We spoke to Daisy about her start-up journey.

How did you get the idea for the business?

After studying Fashion Buying with Design at De Montford University, Daisy designed and made her own sportswear collection in her final year.  It was this project, which made her realise that she wanted to start her own clothing company.

“The support from Nwes made the scary steps of building a business enjoyable.”

Did you encounter any challenges?

The biggest challenge was finding the right supplier to make my designs come to life.  It took weeks of research, and months of developing products – but I found my dream supplier to make it all happen.

How did you feel when you gained your first customer?

I held a launch night to showcase my collection with a catwalk show.  We had a lot of customers that evening.

It was so very lovely to hear people talking about my designs – how the print was so pretty, and that the quality of the products was excellent.  It made me feel that all the hard work was paying off and it was just amazing to see people so excited to get wearing my designs.

How did Nwes support you on your start-up journey?

I found attending a free workshop on budgeting and financial forecasting especially helpful, and was provided with a business plan template, which helped me to develop my business model and plan.  The support from Nwes made the scary steps of building a business enjoyable.

I am now looking to the future, and, in two years I would love to have a larger collection to offer with more statement prints, more diversity and printed trainers.  I hope to get more women feeling confident about how they look and wanting to succeed in sport.

What advice do you have for others looking to become their own boss?

Things take time.  Rome was not built in a day. Do not rush to the finish line and don’t ever give up when challenges get in your way.  A positive attitude and hard work can get you a long way.
