Peter Lawrence, based at Nwes’ King’s Lynn Innovation Centre (KLIC), has been recognised by Enterprise Nation as Britain’s Top HR Adviser.
Peter picked up the award from a field of over 500 at a ceremony in the City of London in March. The top 50 advisers across ten business categories were all put up for public vote to determine the winners. Peter is still unsure how he was nominated and certainly didn’t expect to win after meeting competitors in his category from much larger companies.
Peter is the Managing Director of his own HR business, Human Capital Department, founded in 2012. Though Peter’s venture into HR did not begin there, his wealth of knowledge and expertise has carefully grown over a number of years while exploring the globe. Peter’s first HR position required a relocation for the Slough local to the Scottish city of Aberdeen. Little did Peter know then that his passion for HR would take him even further afield in the years to come. After a company reshuffle and the choice of either taking a step back into recruitment or taking redundancy, Peter chose redundancy, a decision that resulted in him taking a job in HR in the Middle East. An unexpected venture that lasted eight years.
However, although Peter loved working in HR, he became frustrated working for other people, so decided it was time to take the next step – to return to the UK and start his own business. Partnering up with businessman Rod Lee, Peter founded Human Capital Department. With the plan to start small and build up, Peter initially took out a Virtual Tenancy at KLIC. Benefiting from a professional image and an address and presence in the county he now calls home, the Virtual Office purchase was a great initial step for Peter without the financial commitment of leasing workspace. Of course, when the time came in September 2017 when Human Capital Department was more established, Peter took on office space at KLIC for himself and business partner Rod, and although it may not be the Middle East, he is thoroughly enjoying it.
Peter says: “Centre Coordinators Zoe and Charlotte are friendly and efficient, and Business Consultant Paul Gardener is very approachable. From time to time if there is something I’m not sure about, Paul is on hand for support. Plus, the centre is great for networking and training sessions.”
Despite Peter’s roots at KLIC, this hasn’t stopped his adventures. His enthusiasm for HR has seen him voyage to Dubai and even 10 Downing Street!
And what would the nation’s top HR Adviser say to others looking to start a business in HR?
“Having your foot in the door with smaller companies can help with working with bigger companies – a great way to grow your business organically.”
“Approach companies like Nwes and get that support, advice and coaching. It’s the difference between those businesses that fail and those that thrive.”
Continuing with his success, Peter is looking to grow Human Capital Department’s services by introducing a HR toolkit, drawing together common questions faced by many clients in one easy to access file.
