An entertaining fundraising football match between an enterprise agency and a local ladies team has raised over £2,000 for local Paralympic swimmer, Jessica-Jane Applegate.
Nwes, which supports start-up and growing businesses, was challenged to the match by Norfolk Women’s and Girls Division One team, North Walsham Angels, when they heard of the enterprise agency’s campaign to raise money for Jessica-Jane following a cut in her funding.
Taking place on Sunday 11 June, the competitive, good-humoured and high-spirited encounter was supported by a large number of businesses, and Easton and Otley College, who offered the use of their 3G football pitch at no charge.
Nwes CEO Kevin Horne says.
“The competitive streak truly came out in the Nwes XI, and old bones were on the pitch for much longer than they should have been! The difference between the teams was evident when they arrived 90 minutes before the match for warm up routines, including cones. The Nwes XI, confident in their inner ability, ambled in 20 minutes before kick-off, most after a nice pub Sunday roast!”
“Straight away the Angels were on the attack, putting pressure on the Nwes back four, whose combined age exceeded that of the entire Angels team, however, the experience and guile gained over the years won out, helped by some sound goalkeeping from Nwes’ Richard Voisey.”
The crowd swelled and the cake stall was rushed off its feet as the crowd became vocal. This inspired both teams to up the pace and the first half closed with a score line of 4-2.
