Tessa Killingbeck had always made her own pictures and greeting cards. In December 2013, she tested the market by introducing a range of Christmas cards to three of Norwich’s leading card stockists. Encouraged by the success, Tessa decided to start a business.
She first heard about Nwes from her friend, and was soon registered to attend five days of free training by Nwes Business Trainer John Clarke, where she would learn all about business planning, market research, tax, bookkeeping and insurance. Tessa said, “The course helped me to establish myself, I will remember the pointers forever.”
“Nwes staff has been consistently helpful, and gone out of their way to assist me – even a year on – with very real solutions to problems during my first year of trading. Victoria and John have given me enormous practical advice and support, and have propelled me forward, for which I am extremely thankful.”
Running a business is not always easy. Tessa’s advice?
“Be aware that you need tie up loopholes and have them written down in ink. Imagine the worst, and always have contracts or emails to prove terms and costs agreed. People will change their tune with not a moment’s notice, so be astute!
Armour yourself with all the knowledge you can. Building the framework to a profitable business can be like running the gauntlet. The more savvy you are, the better chance of winning your battles, and ultimately, the war to success!”
Tessa’s cards really are unique and unlike anything else we have seen on the market, and her fans say Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without them. She produces cards for any occasion, and you can see the full range on her website.
Since launching three years ago, the business has gone from strength to strength – Tessa’s greetings cards are available in Notcutts Garden Centre on Daniels Road, Fabulous Frames on Upper St. Giles Street, The Book Hive on London Street, and Warings Home on Cattle Market Street, all in Norwich. Now, Tessa is printing her designs on bags and sweatshirts, as well as designing wedding stationary packages. One day she would like to see her pictures in a published book. Send us a signed copy Tessa!
