A passion for creativity and a career spanning four decades teaching Visual Arts in Further and Higher Education led Mike Cobb-Pernak to following a new path of entrepreneurship, and setting up his own business, Team Creativity.

We spoke to Mike about his vision, his support from Nwes, and how the King’s Lynn Innovation Centre is supporting the business as it moves forward.

Tell us more about Team Creativity

Team Creativity is a free digital hub, encouraging artists and designers, performers and musicians from all creative industries to showcase their portfolios, promoting their ideas and talents.

The website offers a no fee e-commerce shop, which provides a platform to market and sell work, enabling users to turn their creative passion into a commercial business.  Additionally, the site hosts a jobs board, in collaboration with Vivico Recruitment, and an opportunities board advertising internships across all sectors of the creative industries.

What is your motivation behind the business?

I believe that the arts bring huge benefits to our society and well-being, and I hope that this new project will help to promote and inspire.

With Team Creativity also encouraging networking across the arts, users are encouraged to share ideas and updates as they pursue their creative journey.

The goal is to enable creative people to achieve their vision – something I passionate about, particularly as the arts has been less prominent in the school curriculum in recent years – something which I feel is not only damaging to our young peoples’ development, but raises the question of who will be attending galleries and museums in the future?

“Being new to the area, I wanted a professional business address for Team Creativity, and a virtual office through KLIC was ideal.  I’ve also benefitted from a number of networking events at the centre, and have even had the opportunity to be a guest speaker.”

How has Nwes supported you in your entrepreneurial journey?

I was put in touch with Business Advisor, Stephen Davies, who supported me through the steps of launching Team Creativity.  This included applying for a Start Up Loan.

In addition to the Start Up Loan, I received 100 hours of advice and guidance from Stephen, who believes in the business idea.

Critical thinking in terms of next steps, having a sounding board, and signposting to potentially helpful contacts and funding was incredibly helpful.

I have also taken advantage of virtual office solutions through the King’s Lynn Innovation Centre, and is open to the possibility of taking office space at the business centre in the future, depending on the growth of the business.  Being new to the area, I wanted a professional business address for Team Creativity, and a virtual office through KLIC was ideal.  I’ve also benefitted from a number of networking events at the centre, and have even had the opportunity to be a guest speaker.

What has the highlight been so far?

The excitement of seeing an idea come into fruition, at the age of sixty plus.  I have enjoyed the risks, challenges, finding solutions, and realising the potential of the site as I added more and more features.

The time is right to reach out to budding creative entrepreneurs who wish to engage with Team Creativity to help drive the project forward. This is a call to action!

We have tested the market to help us trial critical online user functions with the intention of going live soon. I will spare myself time to celebrate when, and only when, the hub has one million users!
