A successful by-product of a marketing agency, HUT42, which launched in November 2016, is one of the latest businesses to move into King’s Lynn Innovation Centre, Nwes’ flagship innovation and business centre in West Norfolk.

We spoke to business owner, Chris Girdlestone about HUT42 and what it’s like to call KLIC home.

Tell us more about HUT42 and what you offer?

We work with customers to determine a cost-effective approach to creating or improving digital systems.  We thrive on finding ideal solutions for our clients.

I am immensely proud of all that HUT42 has achieved to date.  Establishing the business as its own entity has enabled the team to focus on offering new software and app development services, which were not previously available as part of a digital marketing agency.

What makes you unique?

We invest a lot of time to understand a business and its needs.  It is this approach to relationships with customers which is unique.

We don’t just give a generic estimate based on a customer’s brief; we get to know a business and understand what they actually need and want, and work with them to achieve that.

The team and I have the expertise and qualifications to rival some of the bigger corporations, but without the associated overheads, we are able to be competitive.

I have a computing science degree and I used to be a software developer. My technical background is a real asset when explaining how our expertise can help our clients to solve their problems and improve their systems.

“I have no regrets about moving into the centre.  KLIC is a vibrant hub of activity for businesses all around the area and beyond. By being part of this culture, we have met and built relationships with many other businesses, which we perhaps wouldn’t have otherwise come across.”

How did you feel when you gained your first customer?

Our first customer was a large, local organisation.  It was a great moment for the business when organisations began to put their trust in us by employing our services.

When it sank in that all the things we had planned were actually happening, we felt a huge sense of satisfaction.  All our hard work had come together and our efforts were coming to fruition.

How has the business developed since moving into KLIC?

We now have five employees, and are happily established at King’s Lynn Innovation Centre.

From our Norfolk base, HUT 42 has experience with working with clients in Europe, United States and Australia, and we have also benefitted from business advice from Nwes.

I have no regrets about moving into the centre.  KLIC is a vibrant hub of activity for businesses all around the area and beyond. By being part of this culture, we have met and built relationships with many other businesses, which we perhaps wouldn’t have otherwise come across.

We even had a visit from His Royal Highness, Duke of York, and that certainly wouldn’t have happened if we were in alternative premises!

Do you have any advice for other business owners?

Just do it and don’t be scared to make mistakes.  Be prepared to meet more people because opportunity will come from places you’ve never thought of; never underestimate the power of word of mouth.

Accept help – you can’t do it all yourself and you don’t have to.
