Sarah helps businesses benefit with sales appeal

Tuesday, 23 February 2010

With over 25 years Sales experience, Sarah Steel decided she wanted to build her own business and be her own boss.

Specialising in working in Sales roles for manufacturing businesses, the shrinking of the UK manufacturing sector means there are a lot less full time roles available. By creating her own business Sarah, who lives in King’s Lynn, believed there was scope to offer her expertise in smaller affordable chunks to local businesses.

In order to set up her business she turned to business support experts NWES for help. Meeting an NWES business advisor for the first time at a Jobcentre event, she was interested to learn how they could support her, particularly as her main concern was whether such a business would be viable.

Over several months she met with NWES business advisors through the Inspiring Women’s Enterprise programme and attended intensive workshops to help her research and plan her business fully. This process saw her idea evolve from just providing Sales services to adding a professional sales training arm to her business.

‘Sales Appeal’ started trading in early 2010 and due to her experience, Sarah is able to offer a comprehensive package of services and is quick to point out the difference between Marketing and Sales: “It is a common misconception that marketing and Sales are the same thing. They are quite distinct and both parts must be in place to generate customers who will buy regularly and eventually lead to business success”.

“Business owners spend time and money on the marketing side of their business and products but often neglect the sales process. This can be because we are uncomfortable with selling and create our own barriers that stop us from securing that extra income.”

This is where Sarah believes an experienced sales person can help. “In difficult times when every penny spent is precious it is even more relevant to spend money wisely on support that will have an impact on your business”.

NWES was able to provide help and guidance under the Inspiring Women’s Enterprise programme, a fully-funded initiative in the East of England that provides women with the skills to get into employment or start a business. This project is an Enterprise Coaching product, which is part of Solutions for Business, the Government's package of publicly funded business support designed to help companies start and grow. It is funded by the European Social Fund and the East of England Development Agency.
