The opening of a new tattoo, piercing and body modification studio in Norwich, has meant local resident Joseph has been able to fulfill a lifelong ambition.
Joseph Wythe, 24 of Norwich, opened his studio, Factotum on Maddermarket in January and is relishing the chance of being his own boss and bringing his vision to life; the studio itself is spacious and light and visitors can expect to be greeted by a gallery of work by various artists. Factotum has undergone health and safety checks by the local council who have happily approved the studio and upstairs is where body modification (tattooing and piercing) is carried out.

Prior to setting up his business Joseph Wythe, spent 2 years working as an apprentice for a studio in New Zealand and after finishing this had a further one years full time experience in the trade. It was when he was in New Zealand that he discovered the different aspects of body modification which as well as tattoos and piercing can include procedures such as scarification which involves precise cutting of the skin as a permanent body modification.
“My time in New Zealand made me realise that I wanted to set up my own business and am proud that we are the first studio to use the title ‘body modification’ in Norwich. We offer tattoos, piercings and more in a friendly, approachable environment”, comments Jospeh.
In order to set up the business Joseph initially sought help from The Prince’s Trust who put him in touch with business support experts NWES. He was able to gain free advice and training from both organisations as part of the ‘Go for it - Enterprising Norwich’ programme managed by Norwich City Council.
“NWES has been a huge help. I have been able to get a much better grounding in setting up a business, from learning about bookkeeping to advertising”, comments Joseph.

NWES Business Advisor Richard Salmon adds: “Joseph deserves every success with his venture. He has been meticulous in the planning and has shown excellent management skills during the process to ensure that the business opened in a fashion that he wanted”.
Asked if he had any tips for budding entrepreneurs, Joseph says, “make sure you budget well! Take any advice you can get but don’t lose sight of the vision that you have for your business”.
