Lowestoft is the enterprise capital of Britain!

Wednesday, 2 December 2009

On Monday I was privileged to have been given the opportunity to attend the Enterprising Britain finals in London. Accompanying John Balch, Karen Bolton, Michael Muskett (NWES Chairman) and Peter McCarthy Ward (EEDA), the event took place on the 28th floor of the Altitude venue which enjoys amazing views of the London skyline - it was that high a building, my ears popped in the lift!

The awards ceremony commenced with a speech from TV dragon, Peter Jones. The 12 regional finalists from across Britain were then presented with a trophy for their achievement in reaching the finals. More speeches followed, and finally it was time to announce the three winners…

So when the first award for ‘Highly Commended’ was announced, we waited with bated breath. This went to Ashfield Skills Centre in Nottinghamshire. Perhaps, we thought, it’s our turn next.

The ‘Runner Up’ was then awarded to Pride of Hull. At this point we thought our luck was out…….

……Until we heard the host describe the winning town as being ‘rural’ with a ‘fishing industry’. The NWES team all looked at each other with wide open eyes…...

……‘NWES Lowestoft!’ was then declared as the most enterprising place in Britain. Shock set in and there was slight hesitancy in getting up from our seats. On the way to the floor admittedly I was choked, but held this back as I approached the 10ft (well that’s what he seemed to me) Peter Jones. We were all smiles and this set in for the rest of the day.

One point to note is that the judges stated the NWES activity in Lowestoft is something other towns should take inspiration from and seek to implement.

The media coverage we’ve had so far has been superb, including local, regional and national press. It’s such an important and high profile title for our company to win and it was without a doubt the proudest moment I’ve had at NWES.
